Sounds of the 50s , 60s and 70s

If the 1960s was a musical revolution, the 1950s was the Big Bang that triggered it. The decade began with the airwaves dominated by smooth, orchestral traditional pop and big band crooners. But by 1955, a seismic shift occurred: rhythm and blues crossed over with country music, independent radio stations started blasting electric guitars, and Rock and Roll was born, changing youth culture forever.

Rock and roll didn't appear out of thin air. It was a cross-pollination of genres that were previously separated by race and geography:

  • The Fusion: The driving rhythm and structure of African American Rhythm & Blues (R&B) blended with the twang and storytelling of White Country & Western (often called rockabilly).

  • The Sonic Signature: Fast tempos, heavy emphasis on the "backbeat" (beats 2 and 4), walking basslines, and the electric guitar taking over as the lead instrument from the saxophone.
